Haiti sets September 7 as official start of 2026–2027 school year

At a press conference held Wednesday, August 5, 2026, the Haitian minister of Education, Vijonet Déméro, confirmed that the 2026-2027 school year will officially open on Monday, September 7, across the entire national territory.

For families who have spent recent years navigating school closures, displacement, and uncertainty, that single date carries real weight. It means classrooms opening on schedule, uniforms being sewn, notebooks being bought, the quiet, hopeful choreography of a new year, restored.

Education Minister Vijonet Déméro used the announcement to lay out more than a calendar. The professor outlined a set of accompanying measures: a curriculum reform, teacher training programs, the distribution of textbooks, school kits, and uniforms, and reinforced school cafeteria programs.

Moreover, according to the Minister, the government also plans to install solar energy and internet systems in public schools, alongside continued rehabilitation of school buildings.

Perhaps most striking is the expansion. Six new public high schools will open their doors, and nine new Technical Higher Education Centers will be created, widening access to education across several regions of the country.

September 7 is now circled on calendars across the country. For thousands of students, it will simply be the first day of school. For a nation still rebuilding, it is something closer to a promise kept.
